How To Fight The Summer Bulge

6/10/2015

How to fight the summer bulge
Why is it that Summer can be a time of putting on Five Extra Pounds?  Well, I can tell you from personal experience, no I am not perfect, I too can put on weight...and this is how - enjoying life to the fullest.  I believe that during the summer months it is a great time to get caught up with friends and family, as we tend to hibernate in the Winter, and getting together with friends and family can mean that extra glass of cold white wine, those delicious sweet potato fries… These are my downfalls. What are yours?

Well, Fall is around the corner and I always look at after Labour Day as a time to get back on track. So here are a few suggestions for a healthier diet that I am going to use and perhaps you would like to try out as well.  I would love to hear how they work for you.

Root Vegetables such as yams, turnips, beets, red potatoes, squash and even a few carrots actually help you to lose weight because they are high in fiber and contain high water levels which helps to fill you up longer. Also they have a lower concentration of calories compared to other foods such as pasta.

Research has shown that individuals who eat breakfast live longer, have healthier hearts and are less prone to depression and stress and are slimmer. Research has also proven that people who do not eat breakfast will be hungry mid-morning and will turn to high fat snacks such as something sweet, and this in turn is likely to cause them to put on weight.

Green Leafy Vegetables such as spinach, cabbage and broccoli can prove to be very filling.  They are bulky veggies because of plenty of leaves and stalks, they also contain folic acid which is important for nerve functioning and helps to prevent heart disease.  Broccoli contains one/seventh of the calories found in pasta.

A recent study from Canada is suggesting that a key chemical in chilies can boost your body's ability to burn fat and curb your appetite because capsaicin, the chemical that gives chilies such as cayenne and paprika their pungency actually stimulates a natural process whereby some of the food that we eat is converted immediately to heat.  This is called diet-induced thermogenesis, and this process is great for people wanting to lose weight because it means that we burn up calories automatically rather than storing them.

The Holiday 5 Pound Myth

11/15/2013

Holiday Party Food
At this time of year many of us are thinking about how we can avoid that nasty "five pound" weight gain that the Experts talk about. Believe me this is not necessary, in fact you can maintain your weight during the holidays very easily.

The time up to Christmas and between Christmas and New Year’s is a wonderful time for getting together with family and friends.  However, it is also a dreaded time in so many people's minds and often times many of us just give up to those extra "five pounds" and say "Who Cares I Will Lose It in the New Year". Rather than making a New Year's resolution to lose weight, why not make a Pre New Year’s Resolution not to put any on.

Here are some suggestions:
  • Make sure you get a good night’s sleep the night before a party. Sleepless nights are directly linked to an increase in the body's production of a hormone called Ghrelin, which is a hunger hormone.
  • Keep up your exercise program, and in fact, exercise in the morning before any holiday dinners or parties.
  • Drink plenty of water; make sure you drink an 8oz glass of water before a big meal.  Also, drink water in between an alcoholic beverage.
  • Find healthier recipes for holiday parties with tasty substitutes for high fat ingredients.
  • Fill half of your plate with healthy veggies.
  • Bring a healthy dish to a party that is tasty and that everyone will enjoy. It will be easier for you to eat wisely when you have support.
  • When getting ready for a party, usually we tell ourselves if we starve ourselves all day we can eat more later that night, but actually, it is important to eat every 3 to 4 hours, at the same time of day if possible, it lowers insulin, causing less cravings and less body fat.
  • If you want to lose weight do not eat 3 hours before bedtime. So for example if you go to sleep at 11:00 p.m. your last meal or snack should be at 8:00 p.m.
You do not need to deprive yourself of enjoying the wonderful food during the Holiday Season just remember to make those healthy choices and keep at the back of your mind that in The New Year you may want to lose 10 lbs. but not 15 lbs. by putting 5 lbs. on during the Holidays.

The Exciting Road Toward Anti-Aging

11/10/2012

First of all, before we can understand Anti-aging we have to understand Aging in layman's terms.  That means the kind of aging that we may experience after the age of 50.  The new aches and pains, the feeling of being bloated, the mild feelings of depression, the lack of enthusiasm, weight gain, and generally feeling, "Who Am I" and "What Have I Become?"....That is Aging.

Not feeling the aches and pains, not feeling bloated, not feeling depressed, not feeling unenthusiastic, not gaining weight and knowing Who You Are and What You Have Become ... That is Anti-Aging.

You ask ... how do I achieve that?  The answer is start taking care of yourself before Aging starts, or in the alternative, if you are experiencing some of these symptoms then begin right now to change things.
  • Find an exercise program that works for you.
  • Find out what foods make you feel bloated (you may be experiencing some food allergies).
  • Learn how to meditate.
  • Learn to eat clean without depriving yourself.

Take a real hard look at yourself in the Mirror and decide what you want to look like and what you want your life to look like.  Find a supportive environment to make these changes.  That may be a Life Coach...

If you are ready to crack the code ... If you are ready to get in the zone ... If you are ready to achieve sustainable change ... If you are not looking for a quick fix ... and If you are willing to do whatever it takes to get there, then you are on the road toward Anti-Aging and being and feeling ageless, which is a life long journey.  In my sixth decade of life, I am still on this fun and exciting journey and loving every minute of it.

Today Is World Menopause Day!

10/18/2012

I am pleased to announce that I am now a regular contributor to The Huffington Post Canada. I started it off by writing an article for World Menopause Day where I share my story of Menopause and the solutions I found. Read the blog HERE.

What is World Menopause Day? According to The International Menopause Society, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, it has been designated World Menopause Day as a day that the IMS and the member national societies of CAMS, the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies, distribute materials and organize activities to inform women about menopause, its management and the impact of estrogen loss. They have also designated the whole month of October to be World Menopause Month.

The focus this year is the impact of weight gain in menopause and why it is important to exercise and eat healthy.

Be on the look out for what others are doing today and the rest of the month:
Poise - The company has launched a new initiative called The 2nd Talk, trying to get women to talk more openly about this stage of their life as they have been taught in the past not too. Their facebook page today read "It's World Menopause Day! One day may not change everything; "progress" is what we're looking for. And over time, women will finally feel comfortable talking about their experiences, so they get proper treatments for conditions that are very real and not just "all in our heads", as we've been told for years."

Is Menopause or Peri-Menopause Coaching Right For You?

10/3/2012

Are you in peri-menopause or menopause?
Do you feel invisible and feel like you are losing yourself?

If so I understand completely.

This is a time in a woman's life when she is given the opportunity to grow and develop personally.
Your first question is WHY?

Well, although we all have different personalities, our reaction to this time of life seems to be very similar. What I have come to learn is that lack of sleep, hot flashes, mood swings, weight-gain, loss of confidence and difficulty in our most intimate of relationships contributes to this inner searching, as well as, our need to break free of any restrictions that seem imposed on us either in our careers or in our personal lives.

If we feel that we are out of control in these areas of life there is really no place to go but inward on a mission of self-discovery.  Which when taken with the help of an experienced Life Coach can be a wonderful time in life, giving us the opportunity to explore our personal development.

Personal development is becoming who you truly are, not becoming different or better.

When we reach down deep and discover all of the beautiful facets of ourselves that we may not have seen before because we were too busy to look, it is amazing to see the potential for growth that lies beneath the surface.

If you are at this place in your life, I would love to offer you a complimentary 30 minute coaching session to determine if you are ready to take the next step in your life toward becoming who you truly are ... Contact Me!
