A Tip For 4:00 PM In Honor Of World Menopause Day

Menopause Tip
The hour of 4:00 p.m. is often difficult for women in peri-menopause or menopause.
Here is a good tip:
  1. Have a cup of peppermint tea or any other relaxing tea...
  2. With a few slices of an apple and a bit of natural peanut butter.
  3. Then, go out for a half hour to forty-five minute walk.
Try it! You will feel energized and relaxed!

Today Is World Menopause Day!

I am pleased to announce that I am now a regular contributor to The Huffington Post Canada. I started it off by writing an article for World Menopause Day where I share my story of Menopause and the solutions I found. Read the blog HERE.

What is World Menopause Day? According to The International Menopause Society, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, it has been designated World Menopause Day as a day that the IMS and the member national societies of CAMS, the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies, distribute materials and organize activities to inform women about menopause, its management and the impact of estrogen loss. They have also designated the whole month of October to be World Menopause Month.

The focus this year is the impact of weight gain in menopause and why it is important to exercise and eat healthy.

Poise - The company has launched a new initiative called The 2nd Talk, trying to get women to talk more openly about this stage of their life as they have been taught in the past not too. Their facebook page today read "It's World Menopause Day! One day may not change everything; "progress" is what we're looking for. And over time, women will finally feel comfortable talking about their experiences, so they get proper treatments for conditions that are very real and not just "all in our heads", as we've been told for years."

Peri-Menopausal Rage A Psychological Problem?

On August 31st I watched the Dr. Oz show on Peri-Menopausal Rage.  View the episode HERE.

I certainly understand this rage as I was experiencing it myself in my mid 40's before I realized what I could to do keep it under control - it just kind of creeps up on you with no warning.  The slightest thing can set you off into a place that you never thought that you could go, lashing out at all the people that you love in your life...because that is the easiest place to vent.

I have been meditating since the age of 17, however, when I was in my mid-forties it went by the wayside along with eating well and exercising.  It seemed as if I were punishing myself for being so "out of sorts".  I also found that because of the sleepless nights (night sweats) that this also contributed to my moods.

One day the light bulb went on and I decided enough was enough and I had to do something.  I decided to start meditating again using a very specific technique that I devised myself and also put together some techniques to use on the spot when I found myself getting angry.  Low and behold they worked and thus began my journey back to "sanity".  I became calmer, less frustrated by little things, started to work on my weight-loss and began to exercise. 

At the end of the show Dr. Oz mentioned that women going thorough Peri-Menopausal rage should contact a psychologist.  Well, I have to disagree.  I believe that if I had a Menopause Coach to work with throughout my journey things would have been a lot easier.  A Menopause Coach is a woman who has experienced everything that you are experiencing, and has the ability to help you navigate through one of the most challenging and exciting times of your life.  She has done the research about menopause and knows what to say to you and how to help you articulate what you are feeling, eat well and give you exercises that are compatible with you and your stage of life.  A psychologist is trained in psychology and Peri-Menopause is not a psychological issue it is a hormonal issue, a self-esteem issue, a confidence issue, a weight-loss issue and a relationship issue.

How to Use Aromatherapy to Enhance the Effects of Meditation By Special Guest Blogger Wendy Vineyard

Aromatherapy is ideal for helping you to unwind after a busy day, banish a tension headache or help you drift off to dreamland -  and there are so many ways to do it right!

Choosing an essential oil to enhance relaxation is a personal and highly pleasurable act of self-care. Taking the time to find an oil whose scent you love and bringing it home to use as a special aid to relaxation takes belief that you’re worth the extra effort.  Most women I know could stand to spend more time being kind and loving – towards themselves!

Aromatherapy works because these highly-concentrated all-natural oils stimulate the limbic system in the brain. Smells can initiate specific physical and psychological reactions by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters in the brain to balance hormones and increase feelings of well-being.

Many essential oils are complimentary to other forms of relaxation such as meditation, a detoxifying bath, a relaxing massage, or a cleansing facial steam. And it’s a no-calorie alternative to that ‘recipe for weight gain’ glass-of-wine-with-dinner that you may have used in the past to help you relax at the end of a stressful day.

There are several essential oils that can help you let go of anxiety and nervous tension. It’s important that you enjoy the scent you choose. When you use the oil, set the intention to work with it by allowing your body to get comfortable and be open to letting go of whatever is making you tense.

How to choose the essential oil that’s right for you
Many larger natural food stores have aromatherapy ‘testor’ bottles that you can spend time assessing before you buy. Bring a supply of tissues with you! You may want to start with lavender essential oil- a traditional floral scent that our grandmothers used to scent their linens and keep away the moths! One drop on a tissue is all that’s needed to get a good idea if this is the oil for you. Wave the tissue near your face and breathe in through your nose gently. If you like the scent, a good-quality lavender essential oil has many uses beyond relaxation and easing tension - including curing insomnia, easing headaches, and helping wounds and bruises to heal when used directly on clean skin. 

While you’re at the aromatherapy counter, you may want to do the ‘sniff test’ on one, or more, of these relaxing oils: Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Marjoram, Clary sage, Geranium, Lemon, Juniper and Cypress. You may want to buy two and blend a drop of each together to give you a ‘third’ scent for the price of two! Be careful that you don’t experiment with too many scents at the same time – that’s been known to start a headache!

Note: Treatment with aromatherapy is not advised for people who have advanced heart conditions, advanced cancer, an organ transplant, appendicitis, seizures, diabetic reactions, recent heart attack or stroke. If you’re pregnant, avoid clary sage, cypress, jasmine, lavender, and chamomile which can induce/normalize menstruation.

How to Use
Less is best when using essential oils. A drop or two may be all that you need!

Inhalation – put 1-3 drops essential oil of your choice onto a handkerchief, tissue or cotton ball and inhale whenever symptoms arise. You can also purchase an electric aromatherapy diffuser for your home or car. 

Body Moisturizer – Mix 5-8 drops essential oils of your choice, to 1 tbsp (15 ml) unscented lotion, cream or ‘carrier oil’ such as sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil or apricot kernel oil.

Massage Oil/Bath – Mix 8 drops essential oils of your choice, to 1 tbsp (15 ml) ‘carrier oil’ such as sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil or apricot kernel oil. Stir into warm bathwater.

Milk Bath – Stir 8 drops essential oil (total) into ½ cup milk or cream to disperse oils and pour into bathwater to create a luxurious hot milk aroma bath.

Room Spray - Spray: Add 2-10 drops essential oil to a 4 oz spray bottle. Add ½ oz vodka and shake to disperse the oil. Add 2 oz purified water and shake again before spraying. Avoid spraying on wood furniture. Can also be used as a linen spray.
