Barb Scollick I was reading an article this morning about New Mom's experiencing a desire to get back in shape after the birth of a new baby and that Exercise and Meditation can reduce the chances of depression. It triggered an old feeling in me and I automatically went back to the way I felt over 40 years ago when I gave birth to my two girls, one in 1971 and the other in 1973. At the time there were no groups to reach out to that were a support system for New Moms. I actually am feeling quite emotional writing this blog and remembering how I felt...isolated, depressed and at times so lonely that I wanted to scream... I was a very young mother, 23 when I gave birth to my first daughter and 25 when I gave birth to my second daughter. A 2008 study by Dr. Cassandra Vieten from the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute looked at the effects of mindfulness meditation and Hatha Yoga on prenatal stress and mood and demonstrated a 20-25% reduction in stress levels and anxiety in pregnant women. Brain Power... Did you know that when an individual meditates they are actually exercising their brain? Meditation is like cardio for your brain. Meditating keeps your brain healthy and strong, says a recent study out of UCLA. The study took a group of individuals who meditated on a regular basis and found that they had a larger number of white-matter fibers which made their brains larger and, therefore, better equipped to combat age related atrophy.

In one study, research teams from two world-famous universities studied seventy-three residents in homes for the elderly. The subjects were given either no treatment or daily meditation. After four years one quarter of the non-meditators had passed away. All of the meditators were still alive.
In 1978, Robert Keith Wallace completed a ten year study of meditators, evaluating their biological age by using three indicators; blood pressure, hearing and near point vision. He found that the subjects who had meditated for five years or less were on average five years younger biologically and that the subjects who had meditated more than five years were on average twelve years younger biologically. For example, sixty-five year olds had fifty-three year old bodies. If you could subtract twelve years from your biological age by simply doing a twenty minute practice of Meditation daily would you? For me it is easy, I say YES and have been meditating since the age of seventeen and I guess that is why people say I do not look my age. Biologically, I am 65; however, it feels great to be 53 and loving every minute of it! Why not start now?
