Don’t you dislike that word? To me when I hear the word stressed it brings up all kinds of feelings of being out of control. As woman we have so many things to handle in our lives…children, parents, significant others, grandchildren, business, jobs, shopping (and I don’t mean the fun kind). When is there time for us? What I found works for me is a schedule. So I know exactly what the day has in store for me. You can do it at night before you go to bed, a great time to do it, so that you purge all of the thoughts from your mind in order to have a restful sleep. Sound like a good idea? I put down the time of day that I wake up and then the time of day that I go to sleep at night and then fill in the blanks. Always schedule in free time for yourself so that you do not feel there is no time for you. This time can be to do some well-deserved clothing shopping, go to the gym, meditate, read, meet with some girlfriends, or simply take a walk. It really works…you know at a glance what you have to do for others and then what you can do for yourself. By doing this you eliminate that rushed and hurried feeling of not being able to get everything done and feeling out of control. Now don’t forget to schedule in eating. We have to eat three meals and two snacks to keep a healthy weight and keep our “furnace burning”.

Years ago Sixty was looked at as being old.... When we were in our twenties, thirties and even our forties it seemed so far away that we never thought of it. Well, guess what, we should have, because taking control of your health is important at any age. Did you know that your skin starts to lose its elasticity after the age of thirty? So if you are not eating properly and not moving your body even in your twenties and into your thirties, you will start to see skin that is sagging and guess what you don't have to be old to have this happen. This maybe a wakeup call for some of you and just a validation for others that are on the right track - If you are having trouble losing weight and feel that you need some help I am here for you with many years of experience. For those of you who were not into fitness in the 80's and 90's she was The Fitness Guru. She did all kinds of exercise tapes including walking CDs. She was awesome and still is. I could not believe it when Marilyn asked her how old she was and she said 60!
A girl after my own heart....She looks like a woman in her late forties. She has been into exercise and eating healthy for years and it shows. It is possible for all of us to be youthful into our 60's. I know because I have "cracked the code", and like Kathy Smith, I feel wonderful. My wish for all of you is to feel and look like you are in your 40's when you reach your 60's the time to start is now. Make 60 the new 40 for you. Begin with simple exercises in your own home. I literally woke up one morning at the age of 45 and I was shocked by what I saw in the mirror. I obviously had been looking in the mirror prior to this but I guess I was not seeing myself very clearly…a good fashion sense can hide a lot of things…
1. My stomach was very bloated and this is not traditionally the area that I carry weight 2. My hips, which is the place that I do carry weight, were larger than I had ever seen them 3. My skin seemed so pale 4. My hair was rather dry and lifeless 5. I had wrinkles that I had never seen before 6. I weighed 160 lbs. and I am 5 feet three inches tall 7. I felt old and out of shape 8. I felt as though my life was slipping away from me 9. I felt a little angry and hopeless all at the same time I know your first question is how did this happen? I asked the same thing. Reflecting back on my lifestyle I was doing a great deal of travelling with my fashion agency at the time. I was not eating properly. I definitely was not exercising or meditating. Do you think this was my wakeup call? YES IT WAS! First Step: I put together a schedule so that I could fit in meditation and exercise. I started exercising first thing in the morning by getting up one hour earlier and I meditated at night. Second Step: I started making healthier choices with respect to food. Third Step: I went to see my doctor to see where my thyroid levels were. And thus began my journey into Menopause…. I have been there ... I have survived it, feeling better than I did at 45 and I know looking better. I embody a woman at the age of 64 who has more energy than you can imagine. This enables me to keep up with my grandchildren, who are 5 and 9. In fact the other day, how great was this, I was skipping rope with my granddaughter! It was “awesome” and we were singing a song that I used to sing when I was her age. “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear Turn Around” - do you remember it? What a gift to be able to do this and not to have to lie down to rest afterwards. We then went bike riding…. I encourage you to take control of your life at whatever age you are now…it is never too soon…or too late to get back on track. Here is what was found to be Very Important in Becoming or Being Sexy Over Sixty by percentages: Attitude - 93% Rest - 80% Diet - 93% Exercise - 93% Meditation - 60% Based on these results, you might be surprised to learn that neuroscientists have discovered that certain areas of the brain light up in Buddhists who regularly practice meditation – in particular, it is thought that mindfulness can tame the amygdala, an almond-sized part of the brain linked to a person’s mental and emotional health. In another study using magnetic resonance imaging, Boston researchers found that parts of the brain important for attention and sensory processing, how we take in and make sense of things, were thicker in meditators. All in all, there are many clinically proven benefits that arise from a consistent meditation practice. Leslie’s own youthfulness and high-energy levels attest to some of the immediate rewards of meditation. It is a practice of many lifetimes, but taking the first step is something that anyone can do. WOW, just watched the Marilyn Denis Show on Hormones on CTV….great show…very educational…. This is such a wonderful time for Woman and Men Boomers….when I was going into Menopause at the age of 45 there was so little information out there and I really had to research and find alternative doctors who could help me along my journey. I was empowered to realize that many of the things that I have done to be “Sexy over Sixty” are main stream now and at the age of 64 I am continuing to do them. It was so obvious from the discussions on the show that Stress is the key culprit for hormone imbalance. Stress affects our sleep patterns our eating patterns and our ability to move our bodies…in comes Meditation… I know you think you do not have the time. Did you know that you can meditate for as little as seven minutes a day for a start? We need seven and a half hours of sleep…did you know that if you actually meditate for twenty minutes it is equivalent to four hours of sleep? So, if you are sleeping the required time and then you have four hours to play with, think about how rested you will be…how calm... how energized and how empowered!
When we are tired we tend not to eat properly…therefore if we are rested we can make the proper food choices. When we are tired we tend not to have the energy to exercise or the desire…therefore if we are rested and eating properly then we have the energy to exercise. So, you can see that if we change our mind by meditating, we can change our body and then change our life!
